Historic One 55th Place Renovated as Catalyst Project for Urban Revitalization
One 55th Place South is a historic building in Woodlawn that has been renovated to serve as a center for urban revitalization. Main Street Birmingham, Inc. created a partnership of public and private resources to transform this once vacant facility into a home for fostering neighborhood revitalization and economic development. It also bolsters the mission of catalytic development by serving as a home for emerging professional businesses.
Main Street Birmingham, Inc. is a nonprofit organization created to target older neighborhood commercial districts for economic development. MSB utilizes the Four Point approach to revitalization created by the National Trust for Historic Preservation's Main Street Program. For over 25 years this approach for encouraging a comprehensive development strategy in historic commercial districts has valued assets unique to communities and been a clear success throughout the country. Since 2004 Main Street Birmingham has fostered $7.9 million in development and the creation of 97 jobs in Birmingham's older neighborhood commercial districts.
In addition to housing Main Street Birmingham, One 55th Place is an affordable space for entrepreneurs, start-up businesses or nonprofits. The building is now fully occupied by two additional businesses.
