BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (January 5, 2009) - The city of Birmingham will serve as a living laboratory for preservation issues in 2009. Main Street Birmingham, Inc. and the Alabama Trust for Historic Preservation are hosting a week-long Preservation Leadership Training workshop in Birmingham from January 10-17, 2009. The National Trust for Historic Preservation program is designed for community leaders who influence preservation activities in their areas. Participants will study and develop reuse proposals for the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge, a landmark in Birmingham’s historic 4th Avenue Business District. Proposals for the building will be presented to the public at the Temple on Friday, January 16 at 5:30pm.

The workshop, made possible by the support of Alabama Power Company Foundation, Susan Mott Webb Charitable Trust, Alabama Department of Tourism, Southern Progress Corporation, Balch & Bingham LLP, Brookmont Realty Group LLC, Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge, and Brown Chambless Architects, emphasizes the most up-to-date, effective preservation techniques including training in current preservation practices, issues and action strategies. Sessions will include classroom lectures, tours, team projects, role playing and participatory learning experiences.
