Arts Grant Awarded to Main Street Birmingham, Inc. for Nixon Cultural Center Planning

Main Street Birmingham, Inc. is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a grant of $7,000.00 from the Alabama State Council on the Arts (ASCA) for the planning of the future Nixon Cultural Center at Tuxedo Junction.

A long time dream of the Nixon family and the Ensley community, the future Cultural Center, to be housed in the Nixon building at Tuxedo Junction, will provide cultural experiences and educational opportunities for local residents and tourists, celebrate the artistic heritage of Ensley, and honor the legacy of Dr. John Nixon, Sr.

Main Street Birmingham, Inc. became instrumental in this project while working to have the Nixon Building and the Ensley Commercial Revitalization District listed on the National Register of Historic Places, a project funded by a Preserve America Grant awarded to the City of Birmingham and to be completed by the Summer of 2009.

By developing opportunities to provide quality programming in the arts, encouraging heritage tourism as a source of economic growth, and improving the quality of life in the Ensley area, Main Street Birmingham, Inc. is fostering community revitalization efforts.

We are very pleased to receive this contribution from the ASCA for this project.  ASCA grants are awarded through a competitive process and are funded from an annual appropriation from the Alabama State Legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts.
